Traveling Trunk

The Traveling Trunk is a portable cultural education kit designed to bring Ghana—and the continent of Africa more broadly—into San Diego classrooms and community spaces. It is tailored for elementary school students, school assemblies, and faith-based organizations, providing an interactive way to learn about the history, culture, and daily life of Tema, Ghana (San Diego’s Sister City), and its surrounding regions.

What’s Inside the Trunk
Each trunk is curated with engaging, age-appropriate materials, including:

  • Lesson plans & curriculum guides aligned with social studies and global learning standards
  • Hands-on activities such as storytelling, games, and crafts rooted in Ghanaian traditions
  • Artifacts & replicas (traditional textiles, instruments, household items) that allow students to see and touch everyday life from Ghana
  • Multimedia resources including maps, photos, videos, and music to help students visualize and experience Ghana beyond the classroom

Educational Impact
The Traveling Trunk encourages active, experiential learning by sparking curiosity and engaging multiple senses. Students gain:

  • Awareness of Ghana’s history, environment, and contributions to the world
  • Understanding of cultural practices, values, and community life in Tema
  • An appreciation for diversity and global interconnectedness

Why It Matters
By going “beyond the textbook,” the Traveling Trunk helps build empathy and friendship across borders. It empowers students to see themselves as part of a global community and strengthens the bond between Tema and San Diego through cultural education and exchange.
