Welcome to the San Diego–Tema Sister City Society.
Welcome to the San Diego–Tema Sister City Society. For nearly five decades, we have worked to promote friendship and understanding between the people of Tema, Ghana and San Diego, California, through educational, cultural, trade, and community exchange.
This past year, we launched new programs connecting students in San Diego and Tema, expanded our Traveling Trunk outreach, and supported high schools in Ghana with resources to strengthen learning opportunities. We also look ahead to May 2025, when we will celebrate our 49th Anniversary with the Economic Development Symposium: Focus Ghana, welcoming Ghanaian business leaders and partners to San Diego.
Together, we can make a lasting difference. Thank you for your continued support in building bridges across cultures and oceans.
Marnyce S. McKell
President & Executive DirectorOUR SISTER CITY
Tema is a planned community founded in 1960 to provide the newly independent nation of Ghana with a deep-water seaport capable of efficiently managing the millions of tons of cargo imported and exported each year.
Located just 19 miles from Accra, the capital city, Tema has rapidly grown into a thriving suburban metropolis.
Sister Cities International (SCI) selected and approved Tema as a sister city to San Diego because both cities share international harbors and enjoy similar climates.
The city is governed by the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), with the Mayor/Chief Executive Officer appointed by the Governor of Ghana. Tema’s population is ethnically and religiously diverse, and English serves as the official language.
